The 48-Hour Build Challenge Playbook: How to Ship Something Judges Remember
Weekend build challenges reward a clear problem, a working demo and a crisp story — not the biggest codebase. Here is how to compete well, whether you join our monthly 48-hour challenge or any hackathon.
Before the clock starts
- Read the rules and judging criteria twice.
- Prepare your environment: accounts, hosting, a starter template, a form backend.
- Keep a list of three problem ideas; choose when the theme is announced.
Hour 0–4: Choose and scope
Pick the idea where you can show a complete user journey by hour 40. Write the demo script first: the three steps a judge will see. Anything outside those three steps is out.
Hour 4–36: Build the demo path
Build the path end to end with rough edges, then polish only what the demo touches. Commit often and deploy early so you are never one bug away from having nothing to show.
Hour 36–44: Polish and record
Fix visible bugs, write a clear readme, and record a short video walkthrough as a backup in case the live demo fails.
Hour 44–48: Submit and pitch
- The problem in one sentence, with who has it.
- The live demo of the three steps.
- Why now and what is next.
Judges remember one moment. Design your demo around the single most surprising thing your product does.
